Hi
I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read these two chapters And of course I want to send special thanks to all the kittens that have left feedback. It brought a big smile to my face to read your kind words Now for the individual replies: irishlassie101 We will not see much of Steve Jenkins for the bigger part of this fic, but dont worry. In the end the bad guy sure is going to get his ass kicked Arwen276 Im glad you liked my description of Willow. I just couldnt resist dressing our favorite redhead in the exactly same outfit that characterized Lara Croft in the first videogames I liked the movies too, although I was a bit disappointed with the second one. But I have to confess that I like the videogame best Marilda Thank you shuyaku Hum what other touches will do? I guess that youll have to wait and see Spot Thank you Tempest Duer Thank you The Rose24 Thank you. Hopefully the story will live up to your expectations It is going to be a long ride with some bumps in the road. Make sure you have your seat belt fastened bluehippocampus Thank you Red Jassy Im glad that you liked their outfits, although I cant really take credit for that. It was Lara Crofts outfit in the videogame. They were fated to meet So I thought it would be cool if they were both fascinated by the other even before they met Willster Yeah, youre right. They have just met but they are already lost in each other eyes. They cant stay rivals for long Ill post chapter three tomorrow. Once again thank you to everyone who was kind enough to leave a reply Keep the feedback coming (I think Im getting addicted to feedback ) "I know I was born and I know that I'll die. The Artifact - chapter three
|
Hi everyone
gottalovewillow Your first post was a reply to my fic. Im flattered Thank you. So here it is chapter three. Title: The Artifact Author: sabina Feedback: Yes, please. I crave it. Distribution: Anywhere. Just please ask me first. Spoilers: No spoilers whatsoever. This is an AU fic. Rating: It is going to get to NC-17. Pairing: W/T Disclaimer: The Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and its characters are the property of Joss Whedon and Mutant Enemy. The Tomb Raider videogame is the property of Eidos Interactive and Core Design. This fic is not meant to infringe any copyrights. Summary: Willow and Tara are two strong and independent tomb raiders who are both hired to find the same artifact. Trapped inside a temple they realize that not everything is what it seems and they have to work together and fight side by side for their lives as they try to find the way out. Note 1: I want to thank my beta reader TKOLove, who has supported this idea and putted up with all my questions and doubts since the beginning without ever complaining. Your work makes this fic a better one, so thank you TKOLove. Note 2: I love Tomb Raider and this fic was something that had been in the back of my mind for long. Now I finally decided to write it. I hope you all enjoy reading it. Note 3: Thoughts are in italics Chapter three Her hand is so elegant and strong, but gentle. I could hold her hand forever. Actually, I think I could hold all of her until the end of time. Whoa! What am I saying, here? Ok, ok, lets try to be rational. Im obviously attracted to her. Just that vulnerable look that she has in her green eyes right now makes me want to dive into her arms and never come back up. I have to stop this, now. If Im going to be this distracted, Ill probably get killed about five minutes into this quest. Tara was getting confused. So Willow was gorgeous. Ok. But Tara had seen and talked to many good looking girls before and none had ever had this effect on her. She was feeling oddly protective of the redhead, and that just wouldnt do. They were going to be competing against each other and Willow was maybe the best in the world. Tara couldnt afford to have a soft spot for her. Willow was equally confused. Taras hand in her own felt so right, like pieces of a puzzle that finally slid into place. She was feeling warm and comfortable, and that was a new feeling to her. Willow sensed that she could trust Tara with her very life. Uh? Excuse me? Hello, youre going up against each other. Shes not your friend, and you sure cant trust her. How many times have other tomb raiders tried to kill you, especially when you were both chasing the same thing? Countless times. Why would she be any different? And with that last thought, Willow slid her armor into place and let go of the blondes hand. Tara sensed the difference even before Willow dropped her hand. The redheads face had hardened, the line of her jaw tight and tense, and her eyes that before were bright and confident, turned into a shade of green like the sea on stormy dayscold and distant. When Willow spoke next, her voice had metallic intonations that chilled Tara. Well, now that were introduced, I think Ill be going. I have an artifact to find. And without saying anymore, Willow moved to the next room. If I ever find out who hurt you so badly Ill kill them! vowed the blonde. Why am I assuming someone hurt her? Shes just being professional, detached, like I should be! Emotions dont have a place in this game! Tara tried to convince herself. Putting on her own resolve face, she followed the redhead into the other room. This one was different from the antechamber. For starters, it was circular and had three doors. Its walls were covered everywhere with pictures of nature; trees, rivers, bushes and grass, and people enjoying themselves at picnics and playing games. It was beautiful, but Tara didnt have much time to appreciate it, as Willow had already opened and quickly moved through one of the rooms three doors. Willow knew she wasnt being rational. Her mind was screaming for her to stop running and start paying closer attention to where she was going reminding her that moving carelessly inside a crypt was suicide but she just couldnt stop. She needed to get away from that blonde angel, who, with just one look and just one touch was making her heart begin to believe and trust again. Trusting other people had never worked out well for Willow, and this surely was not the right time to start again. So Willow ran to the handle that would open the next door and pushed it forcefully, but nothing happened. She pushed again with the same result. Now this is weird. It should have opened. What am I doing wrong? Tara was outside the door, simply looking at Willow. This new area was a long hallway, just wide enough for one person to pass at a time. At the end there was a door, with a lever next to it. It was that lever that Willow was pushing and pulling frantically, her brow furrowing further each time nothing happened. Then she stopped and just stared at the lever as if she were willing it to work. A smile made its way to Taras mouth before she could suppress it. The redhead was just too cute for words. Theres no way I can take the same path as she and stay focused on my goal. So Ill just back away from here and Ill choose another door. Well, ok, maybe Ill watch her for just another minute. After letting a sigh slip from her lips and stealing one last look at Willow, Tara walked away. She stood in the first room, taking her time to choose a door. I wonder if the car, the trip to Bahamas, and the computer electronics package are behind door number one, two, or three? I know behind which door is one very hot redhead Oh goddessI think Ill go with the less complicated door number three. With her decision made, Tara pulled the switch and stood back in a defensive position. After a long moment without anything happening, she relaxed again, and pulled the switch a second time. Again she tensed, ready for whatever happened when the door opened. And once more, there was no movement. Ok, so this is weird. I wonder if only one path can be open at a time. But if thats the case, why wouldnt Willows door open? I guess Ill have to follow the one way thats already open and see what happens. Tara walked inside the opened corridor, and after only a few steps she heard the door behind her close soundly. This startled Willow, who only then realized she was in the same room with the very person from whom she wanted to run. On instinct more than anything else, Willow pulled the lever once again. And this time it worked. They both heard a strange noiselike thunder approaching, getting louder and louder. Suddenly, a large stone ball crashed from the ceiling and rolled rapidly towards them both. Tara was nearest to it, so she only had time to jump awkwardly over the ball and land on her back with a thud. Willow on the other hand, had a couple of extra seconds to prepare herself. She made a perfect jump, drew her guns in mid-air, and landed on her feet facing the hole that had replaced the door. She waited a couple of minutes, surveying the scene without losing her focus. When she was sure they werent going to be attacked from the new opening, Willow put her guns back in the holsters and turned to the place where Tara was trying to get up. Tara, are you ok? she asked worriedly, while approaching the fallen blonde. Do you handle all situations like this? she said trying to ease the mood. Oh man, I am a dork. That was a really bad joke; heck it wasnt even a real joke. But Willow laughed. It was probably just the aftermath of the adrenaline rush, but shed been so afraid that Tara had been injured, that now she needed to relieve the tension. Youre right, I have to stop being so lever headed. Now they were both laughing out loud. Willow dropped to the floor next to Tara, unable to stand while the fit of giggles shook her body. After several moments, they managed to calm down and Willow asked again, How are you, are you hurt? Im really sorry about the whole lever handle thing. It hadnt worked before, and I had no reason to think it would work nowbut I wasnt exactly thinking when I pushed it, and then that huge ball fell from the ceiling, and everything happened so fastand all I could see was that you were on the floor, and I couldnt really think about anything else, I was worried she interrupted herself and blushed slightly when she realized she had said too much. Wow. The only thing she could think about was me on the floorshe was worried. I only met this girl an hour ago, and already it warms my soul that she cares. I have to watch after my heart. Im the one night things with no strings attached kind of girl. I cant afford to be conquered by this green-eyed champion. IIm ok, I think. My back hurts and its probably going to be a little sore later, but thats all. Willow was engrossed in deep thought, and when she finally spoke again, the first thing she said took the other girl completely by surprise. May I call you Tara? It kind of slipped out of my mouth before I had time to think about it. And well, to tell you the truth, I really dont have any social skillsso I was wondering if it was rude of me to call you by your first name. Of course you can call me Tara, as long as I can call you Willow. After all, its much easier to scream those names outuhmI mean in case another rolling stone comes crashing down on us. Much faster than Miss Rosenberg and Miss Maclay. It can save our lives. She said seriously. Oh good grief, Tara! she chastised herself. Willow laughed lightly. It made all of Taras aches from the fall worthwhile. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about another thing. Did you notice that the door to that first room only closed after you were inside this one? And also, that stupid handle only worked after the door closed. Did you try any switches out there? The blonde already thought about this, so she could see why Willow was asking. Yes, I did. I tried the switch on another one of the doors outside, but it didnt work. I pushed it several times, until I gave up and came here. Hmm Willow considered all the information for a moment and then said, You know, I think we are stuck together. That door wouldnt close until you came in, and this door wouldnt open until the other one was closed. If all the chambers are like this one, well have to move together. Willow didnt know what to think about that. On one hand, she already felt more at ease with Tara than shed ever felt with anyone. On the other hand, to like someone to trust and to depend on them would mean opening herself up to heartbreak all over again. Tara had already reached the same conclusion, and felt almost dizzy with the prospect of spending all that time with the redhead. Tara Maclay, meet the challenge of your life: to spend days fighting alongside the most amazing woman youve ever metand not fall in love with her. Wait a second fall in love? Where did that come from? Yeah. I think youre right. Silence fell over them as both women let the information sink in. So if your backs ok, maybe we should get moving. I think the book mentioned something about correct timing. And well, if we were to get it wrong, it would be better for us to be early than to be late. Yeah. Im ok. Lets get going, then. Willow extended her hand to help Tara get up, and was once more rewarded by a tingling sensation throughout her body. This woman truly is special. They looked deep into each others eyes and smiled. As they passed over the hole left by the stone ball, they came upon the strangest room. It was massive in its length, maybe about fifty meters, and there were two solid platforms one near the entry, and one on the end of the room. Situated between them were panels of suspended wood that looked as if they might fall if someone so much as sneezed. To their left was a closed door with no handle in sight. Ok, so well probably find the way to open the door somewhere on the other side. And only the gods know whats below these wooden things, Willow complained. This is weird. If I were alone I wouldnt be complaining. Its Tara! I feel like I dont have to be strong all the time. Like I can lose it once in a while and trust her to be there to put me back together. Hows that possible? Its like Ive known her forever. Tara was looking around the room for clues, but she found none. I guess you must be right. Well have to take our chances on the floating boards. Ok then, lets go. Willow stepped carefully in the first panel, ready to jump at any sight of danger. When nothing happened, she progressed to the next one. Tara followed her and moved to the first board. However, as soon as the blonde was completely on the plank, it collapsed and fell, despite it having held up for Willow. Tara had just enough time to do a back flip and return to the safety of the stone floor. Well, that could have been worse, Tara remarked dryly, as she looked to the floor beneath the missing board. The floor was covered with deadly spikes. Willow also jumped back to the relative safety of the rooms entry. That was weird. It held itself up while I was there. I suppose it could have been built to collapse at the second touch. Or maybe it was our weight difference. Im heavier than you. I dont think it was thattheres not that much of a difference, Willow smiled and continued, but you can easily find out. This thing looks like a chessboard, squares next to squares. Well, except that it isnt eight by eight, but more like six by forty, and I guess thats not really the important point here. So anyway, as I was saying before I got distracted by chessboards, you can try another panel to see if it falls, and even if it does, well still have lots of ways to get to the other side. Willowbabble is adorable. Yeah, I think thats a good idea Maybe I could be holding your hand, so if the board gives way, I can hold you up and away from the spikes. Willows tone dropped a little at the end. And why would she trust me? Id like that. I dont necessarily want to have a close encounter with those pointy pricklies. Tara smiled, a little overwhelmed with the prospect of holding Willows hand. She trusts me to hold her handto keep her safe. Go me! Now the real problems going to be staying focused on keeping her safe, rather than on the fact that were going to be holding hands. Ok, so maybe shed be safer by herself. The redhead was about to give voice to her thoughts about Taras safety, when the blonde interrupted her. I trust you. Three little words that melted Willows heart. Then lets do it. Willow extended her hand and Tara took it without a second thought. The tingly feeling was present as before, but they both accepted it as part of whatever was happening between them. And by now neither one of them could deny that something was happening. Even though theyd met just a short while ago, it was like their souls recognized each other. They were drawn to each other like the tide to the moon, and were equally as helpless to fight it. Tara stepped carefully onto one of the panels next to the stone platform, and waited for it to break, but it didnt. So they just stayed like that, holding each others hand, lost deep inside each others, eyes until Willow realized it was best for them to keep moving. They had to seize the day; keep working toward the goal. The temple had some little holes in the ceiling through which daylight could enter. They didnt understand how that was possible, as the temple had been built inside the mountainbut whatever the reason, they had natural light and were thankful for it. It gave them a plan; it would be better for them to move in the day and stop to rest at night. Tara She was about to say exactly that, when her stomach decided to complain loudly about the lack of food. She blushed. Uhmsorry. Thats ok. Youre hungry and theres nothing wrong with that. We need to figure out our next move, so what do you say we do some figuring while we eat? I have to marvel at how swift it was for me to begin thinking us, our move, our adventure. A lifetime of habits as a tomb raider working alone, erased from my memory in one morning spent with this redhead. The force sure is strong inside you Willow Rosenberg. Willow smiled and nodded, and they sat in the corner away from the door, half facing each other. They both took from their backpacks a ball of protein and vitamins. You know, started Willow while chewing her protein ball, what bothers me most when Im searching for relics? Tara shook her head, and the redhead continued. Its having to eat these ash-tasting protein balls! Its when Im eating these things that I miss my kitchen and all the yummy stuff I can makeand eat. I love to cook! And heck, Id love it a whole lot more if I could be doing it now instead of eating this thing! Willows nose was wrinkled in disgust and she was nearly pouting. Tara thought it was adorable and couldnt suppress a giggle. Will I discover anything about her that I wont think is adorable? Im starting to seriously doubt it. What? the redhead asked. Its just that you look all cute with your nose wrinkled. You look like a five-year-old who wants to sneak cookies before dinner but just discovered that the cookie jar is missing. Tara laughed as an image of a five-year-old Willow popped into her mind. Youre laughing at me? the redhead asked playfully. Be careful, because I have ways to make you regret that. I would challenge you to show me, but unfortunately we need to figure out how to open this door. Tara sounded disappointed for having to change the mood into a more serious one, but it was necessary. Youre right of course. I was thinking that maybe one of us could go to the other side and see if there was anything akin to a lever that would open that door. That sounds like a plan, but maybe we could both try. On different paths, obviously, Tara added. We can try. Ok, I think Im done with this stupid protein ball. If youre finished too, we can take a shot at it now. Yeah, Im done. They picked up their backpacks and tied them again safely around their respective shoulders. Each went to one board. Tara was the first one to step on, and it held, but when Willow stepped onto the one nearest her, it broke and she had to do a back flip to avoid the awaiting spikes. Tara, its no use. Itll only hold one of us at a time. Since youre the one already on the path you go ahead. Ill wait here. Be careful. Ok then. Ill be back, she said, and she winked at Willow, before turning around and resuming her walk toward the other side. It was a trip without incidents. The other platform looked just like the one from which they started, except that on its surface sat an iron structure the same height as Taras waist. On that formation rested a large bowl that held some sort of liquid. No levers in sight. Tara, do you see anything that looks like a handle? No, the only thing here is this copper bowl. Im looking everywhere, and theres just nothing more, the blonde woman said sadly. Maybe you have to torch it, Willow suggested. Let me just look around a little more to make sure that we dont have any more options. Tara searched everywhere but in truth there wasnt much to look at, only the basin. So she decided to try Willows suggestion. Willow, Im going to try to light it. Tara pulled a box of matches from her pack, ignited one, and dropped it in the bowl. But as it touched the liquid, it extinguished itself. What happened? asked the redhead. It didnt work. Im going to try another one. She repeated the process with the same result. Its official; this thing wont burn. Is there any way to move it? The bowl, I mean. Tara tried to move it to no avail. The iron supporter was stuck deep in the floor, and the basin was well-secured in the supporter. There was no way she was going to be able to move any of those things. ******** That's all for today. Can't Willow cross the boards now Tara is on the other side ? Can the other gods influence the challenge itself by the way ? I sure hope not
Jenkins doesn't have ulteriour motives much, he just wants that stone and is prepared to pay Willow and Tara to get it for him. Fairly standard business. Dropping from a helicopter and swimming to Willow's boat to ask her to do it IS kinda weird though :-) Nice long chapters you write, I like that. Detailed background on both Willow and Tara was nice to read as well. I'm seriously pissed at Willow's parents, 'forgetting' their child like that... sheeeesh. Tara's first tombraiding expidition lends itself for some nasty rumours... the prof. just 'fell' down so Tara could collect all the money herself eh ? How convenient I wonder how the challenge is supposed to last. Had to laugh when I thought about Willow doing that roll/gun-draw when the ball came rolling down. That must have looked nice :-) Grimmy --

Hi everyone
I want to thank everybody that is reading this fic Of course that a special thanks goes to everybody who replied to me. It brings a big smile to my face every time I read your kind words Ok, now for the individual replies: Arwen276 Im glad that you think that the atmosphere is tomb raider like. I have been trying hard to remember the typical tomb raider traps. Kendahl897 Thank you shuyaku Youre right about the demons that haunt them They feel drawn to each other, but it is going to take some time for them to overcome their fears. Tempest Duer Sparks are always flying between those two girls Red Jassy Thank you for your kind words You made me blush Yes, their rivalry is sort of forgotten at least for the moment. Youll have to hang on there and wait to see if itll remain that way Spot Im glad that you liked the instant attraction Getting the start will be a long process, but hopefully one that will be worth the trouble The Rose24 Yes, Willow is trying to run away but to no avail. This temple is a test to true love So there will be lots of traps that need them both in order to be overcome. That redhead can run but she cant hide Grimlock72 Ok, now you got me thinking Lets see if I can answer all your questions About the boards no Willow cant cross to the other side before Tara has came back. Only one of them can touch the boards and go to the other side at a time. There is a reason for the way this trap works that has to do with how to overcome it. No, the other Gods cant interfere with the challenge. They built the temple and the test and then it was protected by Shamias power. They have no way to control what happens inside the temple Youre right Jenkins hasnt done anything wrong, at least not yet. But he is desperate to get the star and hell do anything that he has to in order to get it. Dropping from a helicopter to go talk to Willow, is just one of the many things hes willing to do. And of course youre also right about how convenient it was for Tara that her mentor died in a temple and left her to collect all the profits. Im sure there was rumors about how exactly did the dear professor died and it probably only helped Tara to make a name for herself faster. Ill probably address this question later on the fic I think thats all Im out of breath LOL. Thanks for reading Keep the questions coming xita Thank you for your compliments Hopefully I can keep you liking it irishlassie101 Thank you Ill post chapter four tomorrow. The Artifact - chapter four

Hi there
allykat Thank you Now, as promised here is chapter four. Note 3: Thoughts are in italics Chapter four No, I cant move the bowl or its supporter! I think Im going back to you, since theres nothing here. Ok. Come on back, then, she said relieved. The redhead was becoming restless, wanting Tara to be near her. Tara thought about the situation for a couple of minutes, then thoroughly searched the walls, the floor, and the bowl. She knew they couldnt afford to be going there and back repeatedly. Shed worn a path, she might as well make it worth the effort. On the other side, Willow was pacing back and forth. She knew the blonde was doing the right thing, but it was taking too much time as far as Willows nerves were concerned. She wanted to sit down with Tara and just feel her near for a while, maybe hold her hand. Come back Tara. I know Im being paranoid but I dont want you to be away from me. When she saw Tara finish her search and begin to walk towards the wood pieces, Willow sighed with relief. But then she realized that Tara was coming back the same way she had gone, so as not to use another course. When the panels began to fall one after another under Taras running feet, Willow held her breath, only letting it go when the blonde made it safely across the room. Are you ok? Willow asked concerned. Yeah. Im fine. Im just feeling frustrated. Theres no clue whatsoever on that other side about how to open this door. Damn. It looks like were sort of stuck. Hmm. Maybe we could try pushing the lever in the other room. Maybe pushing it has two consequences freeing the rolling stone, and opening the door. We spent a lot of time on the floor back there, so maybe the door only opens for little time and then closes againand thats why we missed it, the redhead said hopefully, but not really convinced. She was a veteran in dealing with these trap things, and she knew that all things had their purpose in these crypts. That bowl was no exception. They were missing something, and she didnt truly believe that the other handle was the answer. Thats an idea, and if nothing else maybe another stonell come rolling down and we can see what happens to it. Its nagging at me that theres no sign of the first one. It has to have come crashing down here somewhere. Apparently Im not the only one who knows about temple tricks. She doesnt believe in my lever solution any more than I do. But shes right about the rock thing. Id completely forgotten about itwith the whole being on the floor laughing until my belly hurtand then spending the next half hour sitting therenext to herI could even smell her perfumefeel her heatmmm. Hey! Focus! Willow blushed slightly, but Tara didnt notice. Youre right. Id completely forgotten about the rock. Maybe it plays an important role in all of this. Ah, who am I kidding? This rock thingits just curiosity. Its purpose is to crush the other door, and thats all its supposed to do. Well, maybe. Tara said trying to be supportive. Ok, then. You stay here, away from the door, and Im going to the other room to push the handle. Id probably have time to come back here before it reached me, but I think I prefer to jump over it. That way I can be certain its not going to hit me in the back. Be careful, Willow. I know youve done this kind of thing hundreds of times and you did it again just this morning, but still I dont like the idea of you being in danger. She worries about me. Wow. Willow smiled brightly. I will. Now, you watch the stone. Ill be right back. The redhead pushed the lever and heard the familiar sound of rolling thunder. She got herself ready to jump and waited, and as the stone came rolling down, she jumped over it easily. She went back to the other room and saw Tara wide-eyed looking at the wooden panels. There was no trace of the stone, and just as shed thought, the other door was still closed. Tara, what happened to the stone? It crushed the first two wooden panels and then fell toward the spikes, she said in a shocked whisper. Huh?! Willow looked to the panels. They were unharmed and undisturbed. How? I dont really know. A mist formed where the panels were and then it got solid in a matter of seconds. Tara was astonished and worried. This thing they were trying to overcome was more powerful than shed thought. Oh man! I hate when there are mystic forces at play when Im on a quest! It usually leads to undeadly-dead mummy attacks, heavily-armed, insane statues coming to life, assaults by creepy-crawly slimy objects that dont appreciate the essential nature of my heads attachment to my bodythat sort of thing. Quite unpleasant. But hey, they usually die by gunshotssome taking more than others. And when they dont, almost none of them can resist the almighty shotgun. Anything else we come up against we can probably outrun. Stone statues are really heavy and typically slowand mummies trip on themselves a lot, must be all the loose ends Willow was out of breath, but she was rewarded when she saw Tara smile and start to giggle. Oh, thats better. That makes me making a babbling fool out of myself worthwhile. When she looks sad, I feel as if someone extinguished the sun. Willow smiled. She is just so cute. Even if we die here, I swear I dont regret coming to this place. It doesnt matter, because shes with me. Oh my god, I think Im in loveI cant be in love, can I? Ive just met her. Tara was still trying to sort her feelings out when Willow interrupted her. Now what? Do you have any ideas? None. We probably should just sit down and try to think. Yeah. I guess youre right. Thinkings good. Usually. The blonde sat on the floor facing the door. Willow felt the urge to go to her but she fought it, and instead began pacing back and forth. Of all the times to meet the woman of my dreams, it had to be now? Trapped inside a goddamn temple and what the hell am I thinking? I dont believe in dreams coming true, I dont believe in love, and I certainly dont believe in love at first sight. This is just a fleeting infatuation. It began today, itll be over by tomorrow. Willow stopped and faced the wall, not really seeing it. I should have backed away and run like the wind the moment I laid eyes on her. Just the way my heart started hammering in my chest should have been warning enough. But I stayed, and now I dont even care if I die in this roombecause I dont feel alone anymore. Im with her, and thats the only place I ever want to be. The redhead put her hands on the wall in front of her, hanging her head low. She hadnt been happy before while on her own, but that arrangement felt safe, and now her heart was blindly giving itself to the blonde sitting across the way. Willows heart hadnt bothered to ask the rest of her mind or body for permission. So ok, I think my bodys more than happy with my hearts choice. The way it warms itself up when she looks at me with those big blue eyes is proof enough of that. But what about my mind? I dont want to fall in love. I dont want to open myself to all kinds of heartbreak and pain. Ill fight it! Willow smacked the wall with her palm and felt something under her opened hand. Meanwhile, Tara was using this break to think a little about her own feelings. Everything was happening at lightning speed and she needed to think a little about it. So Im attracted to her. Not much of a surprise there; Im gay, shes gorgeous. Duhwhy wouldnt I be attracted to her? Ok, maybe at least in my mind I should be truthful. Im not only attracted to her, I care for her. I want to bear her burdens for her, my arms yearn to be the ones that hold her safe at night, and I want my voice to be the one that soothes her after a nightmare. Im in love with her, I truly am. Taras face lit up with that last thought. Then she started panicking. What if she doesnt like meor worse, what if she doesnt even like girls? She probably doesnt, otherwise, why would she be over there staring at the wall instead of here with me? And even if she is gay, shes a knock-out and Im not much to look at. Dad and Donnie always made sure I wouldnt forget that. Fortunately Willows voice interrupted her before she could continue putting herself down. Tara, I think I found something. Could you come here and take a look? The blonde was rapidly back on her feet and approaching Willow. What is it? Look right here. Using her index finger, the redhead pointed to a spot on the wall. I cant see a thing. Tara was a little puzzled. Even if shes beginning hallucinate, shes still adorable. Apparently Taras affection was making itself noticed in every way possible, maybe to take revenge of the blondes initial denial of its existence. Now try putting your hand on that spot and rubbing it a little. Willows expression was hopeful. Tara did as she was told, and she noticed something engraved in the stone. It was superficial, so it wouldnt be noticed by only looking at the wall, its roughness masking the inscriptions. A hand had to be pressed against it in order to detect its existence. The blondes mouth began to form a smile one that Willow had not seen before, but in the future she would recognize it to be Taras trademark lopsided grin. Willow thought it was absolutely gorgeous. Like thats a surprise. You think everything about hers gorgeous. Her conscience seemed to be mocking her. I think somethings written here, the blonde said happily. It might not have anything to do with the way out of here, but since its hidden, its got to be important somehow. Willow was trying not to be too happy about thisit could turn out to be nothing. Willow, please search the rest of the wall to see if this is the only thing imprinted. Im going to start writing it on paper so itll be easier to read. Tara was already searching for paper and a pencil in her backpack. Hmm The redhead looked disappointed all of a sudden. Whats the matter? Tara asked concerned. Willow was fidgeting with her hands. Well, I cant read hieroglyphs, and thats what the markings seem to be. Give me Sumerian, ancient Greek, or Latin, and Im your girlbut not hieroglyphs. Tara felt relieved. She didnt like to see Willow worrying, and this was a concern she could easily put to rest. Yeah, I think it is hieroglyphs. But dont worry, I can read them. You can? Wow. Her green eyes were filled with admiration and maybe something more, but Tara didnt dare to hope for the more part. As it was, that green gaze was already warming her up from the inside out. The blonde shook herself out of her self-induced Willowdream, and concentrated on drawing the forms her fingers were feeling. Willow watched the blonde for a little longer, then walked away to begin methodically searching every inch of the wall. They were both progressing slowlyto make sure they werent missing anything, but also because every now and then, one would stop and stare at the other and completely lose focus. Willow had already searched the same area three times, not because there was anything wrong with it, but because she kept catching glimpses of blonde hair and a blue shirt, and all else was forgotten. Tara wasnt doing much better. Willows movements, as she felt along the wall, were showing her assets off nicely and the blonde was starting to feel quite hot and botheredher hands tingling and aching to feel Willow. So it wasnt terribly hard to understand why they ended up taking twice the time to finish their respective tasks than they would have if theyd been able to concentrate. When they finally finished their tasks, the light entering the crypt had become dim, signaling the end of the day. Tara, whatever you find out with your translation, I think we should sleep here tonight. At least we know theres no danger here. We dont know if the same is true behind that door. The blonde thought for a moment about it. They hadnt really made that much progress, but she didnt know if theyd really lost any time because the whole right timing thing was just too vague in the book. And Willow did have a point it was dangerous to be wandering around in the dark. Willow saw the different expressions that crossed Taras face, and she waited for the blonde to give her opinion. Youre right. Its better for us to stay here tonight. They made their preparations for the evening, both taking sleeping bags from their backpacks and unfolding them next to each other on the floor of the crypt. They sat on the bags and leaned against the wall. Tara was trying to translate the hieroglyphs, but clearly something wasnt right as she had a worried wrinkle on her forehead. The redhead was chewing her protein ball of the night and watching Tara work. When she couldnt hold her curiosity anymore, she asked, So, what does it say? You look worried. Well, Ive translated it and it doesnt make much sense. What does it say? Willow asked again. She was good with riddles and if that was the problem, maybe she could help. Tara started blushing, which only served to make the redhead even more curiousbut she wasnt about to ask again. W-Well the blonde cursed that stupid stutter. Just because your mind seems to be in the gutter, doesnt mean that hers is, too. So quit being nervous and just tell her for gods sake. She tried again. Well, it says something like this: Only two hearts beating as one can open doors, only two bodies as one can cross a field of spikes, and only the fire in their hearts can light an undying flame. Willow blushed bright red, her face matching her hair perfectly, as one of those phrases replayed itself over and over in her head. Two bodies as one. Does that mean what I think it means? Willow gasped as images of Tara and herself naked, making love hot, sweaty bodies moving against each other faster and faster entered her mind. She shook her head, trying to regain some control. That blonde-haired goddess affected her too much. She could feel her body awakening, aching for Taras, and that just wouldnt do. She had to be focused. Tara had to repress a smile while watching the redheads expression. Well, wellit looks like Im not the only one who misunderstood that phrase. Ive been thinking about it And what delicious thoughts those were. Get a grip Tara! and I think that its indeed the solution to our problem. Well have to be as one to cross the spikes field. She watched delightedly as Willows blush deepened further. I wish I could see what shes seeing. Maybe we could make it come true right here and now. Oh stop it! Shes probably just embarrassed. I dont think its too likely that this flame-haired, gorgeous woman is having lusty thoughts about me. She can have anyone she wants, so why would she want me? Taras depreciative thoughts about herself sobered up her tone of voice, and all traces of her previous amusement had disappeared. So, to be as one, I guess one of us has to carry the other one. Only one pair of feet touches those panels. Then over thereIm betting that if we try to light the bowl together, itll burn, and thats probably the way to open the door. As she heard the blondes interpretation of the phrases theyd found, the redhead felt the temperature start to drop. After a while Willow was calm enough to try to speak, trusting her voice to be able to hold itself. Yeah, I think thats a good plan, and it sure fits the requirements of what was imprinted in the wall. As she said fit the requirements, she blushed and felt the temperature rise again. There is just no stopping you, is there, body of mine? she chastised herself. So we probably should try to sleep now. Since we didnt move much today, well probably need to go faster tomorrow. Well, we dont know if weve fallen behind, but youre right, we should make the most of tomorrow, agreed the redhead. They finished prepping for their nights rest. Willows guns were close enough to pick up quickly if any danger would arise. Their backpacks served as pillows. Willow looked around for a second before entering her sleeping bag. She left it unzipped you never know when you might need to get up in a hurry. It wasnt comfortable to sleep fully clothed with her boots on, but she was used to it. She watched Tara doing exactly the same thing, then settled in for the night. Good night, Tara. Sleep tight, Willow. It was completely dark, too early for the moon to cast its light through the entries on the ceiling. The temperature seemed to have dropped several degrees. In fact, it was freezing. Oh man. Im chilled to the bone. Stupid temple and its traps: If you cant smash them to bits, or spike them to shreds, go on ahead and freeze em to death. And as if thats not enough to keep me up all night, I can hear every single movement Tara makes. Damn lucky sleeping bag. I want to be the one whos wrapped around her. But I cant, I wont give in! Im keeping my distance and Im wearing my resolve face so that I dont forget that I wont give in. Willow sighed profoundly and tried to forget she was coldand that there was a blonde angelso warm and oh so temptingsleeping so near to her. Its so cold. I dont remember being this cold before we lay down. Maybe I could suggest to Willow that we share the same sleeping bag. That way we could put the other one on top of ussort of like an extra blanket. Of course, wed have to be snuggled tight together to fit in this small space but that would only help to keep us warm. Who am I kidding? I just want to feel her pressed against meme in her arms or her in mineit doesnt matter. Tara decided to voice that last thought, although the reasons she was planning to use werent exactly the true ones. ************* I hope you have enjoyed reading this chapter "I know I was born and I know that I'll die.
